The surname
Terry is not a common name in Ireland. It is most
prevalent in counties Waterford and
Cork, with
clusters of Terrys also to be found in Donegal. For the most part these Terrys
were rurally based. In Cork city,
however, Terrys became one of the leading merchant families from the early
fifteenth to the mid-seventeenth centuries, a period of about 230 years. This
website is about this family. At most at any given time it is a story of
about 30-40 families, or about 300 people, and at periods much smaller numbers.
Yet this grouping held significant sway in the affairs of the city of
Cork from 1420
to 1644.Some
